Positive Behavior Support DSP
Job Summary
Positive Behavior Support Direct Support Professionals support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as high structural needs to minimize inappropriate behaviors in being as independent as possible in all areas of their lives, to become and remain involved in their community and to assist each person to achieve personal outcomes that reflect their dreams, hopes and desires.
DSP’s work with people who may be unpredictable, verbally and physically aggressive and self- abusive; exposed to mental and physical demands including back and muscle strain, stress, loud environments, and works in a variety of fast paced settings inside or outside the home/workplace and throughout the community.
Challenges include learning about the people in order to know how to teach and motivate them, recognizing changes in behavior that may indicate additional services are needed, redirecting and implementing Behavior Support plans, and ensuring other plans are implemented correctly while dealing with maladaptive behaviors. Motivating and educating people to perform up to standards of work, home, and community expectations and instilling pride, confidence, and self-respect in the people served is also challenging.
Physical Demands of the Job
- Frequent kneeling, squating, twisting, crouching, crawling, bending, standing and walking for long periods of time
- Lift/carry up to 50 pounds (may exceed during emergency situations)
- Push or pull (wheelchairs, groceries, supplies, etc.)
- Transfers and/or repositioning people who are not able to move on their own, in a sitting or lying position, to and from their chair, toilet, floor mats, vehicles, etc.
- Perform all cleaning duties inside and outside (snow removal, gardening, cleaning, etc.)
- Perform CPR and de-escalation and physical interventions
Requirements for Employment
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Minimum of High School diploma or GED
- Basic fluency in oral and written English.
- Must successfully complete and maintain Medication Administration training certification
- Must complete required Behavior training set by DDD
- Computer experience and comfortable with navigation of technology
Extensive training is provided to new employees to enable them to do the best work possible.
